baptism is one of the most significant ordinances in the LDS movement in fact LDS Doctrine teaches that without it a person cannot enter the Celestial Kingdom the fact that many people have died without having the opportunity to be baptized is a major problem latterday Saints have sought to solve this problem through the practice of baptism for the dead according to this practice those who have already died can have baptisms performed on their behalf by living Latter-Day Saints the eldas church appeals to First Corinthians 15 as proof that baptism for the dead is absolutely biblical before we take a look at 1 Corinthians 15:29 let's consider what the rest of 1 Corinthians 15 is actually about we going to start with verse 12 now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead but if there is no resurrection of the dead then not even Christ has been raised and if Christ has not been raised then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain so in the city of Corinth there was a sect that denied bodily Resurrection they did not believe that Christians would one day be raised from the dead so the Apostle Paul is responding to this absurd Claim by pointing out how inconsistent it is for so-called Christians to not believe in a future Resurrection Paul says that if there is no future Resurrection for us then there was no Resurrection for Jesus and that if there is no Resurrection for Jesus then you should just go home because your faith is f futile what You' believed is totally in vain you're still in your sins and we of all people are most to be pied so this entire chapter is about the centrality of Resurrection to the Christian faith Paul summarizes his logic in verses 16-9 for if the dead are not raised not even Christ has been raised and if Christ has not been raised your faith is futile and you are still in your sins then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished if in Christ we have hope in this life only we are of all people most to be pied with that context in mind let's re-evaluate our text in verse 29 otherwise what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the Dead if the dead are not raised at all why are people baptized on their behalf so what does Paul mean by this verse well this verse doesn't actually tell us what baptism for the dead is because the New Testament never actually explains what was going on many commentators and historians throughout church history have been divided on exactly what was happening in Corinth I think it's really important for us to note what the text does and does not say nowhere in this verse does it command Christians to practice proxy baptism in fact this is the only verse in the Bible that references this ritual or anything like it if this verse really does refer to LDS proxy baptism and if proxy works are such an integral part of the Christian faith the then why is there not one other place in the entirety of the old or new testament that ever references it in fact not even the Book of Mormon contains a single reference to baptism for the dead or any other kind of proxy work no biblical author has ever commanded that any ordinance be performed on behalf of the Dead if this practice really is as significant as latterday Saints suggest then we should expect the Bible to both clearly Define and explicit commanded as a general rule building a massive religious practice off of a single obscure verse that neither commands nor clearly explain said practice is problematic continuing on the Corinthian Church actually never practiced proxy baptism look at how Paul speaks to the Corinthian Christians throughout chapter 15 he says our preaching is in vain your faith is in vain we are found misrepresenting God we of all people are the most Beed why are we in danger did you notice a bit of a theme with those all of the pronouns used in those verses are first or second person pronouns like we or us or you or if you're from the south y'all but look at what Paul says in verse 29 otherwise what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the Dead if the Dead Aren't ever raised from the dead why are people baptized on their behalf the King James version makes this difference all the more pronounced else what shall they do which are baptized for the Dead if the dead rise not at all why are they then baptized for the dead the grammar here is very clear Paul was not saying that we people who believe in a resurrection were baptizing for the dead but rather that they people who deny a resurrection were performing this practice so Paul's Point here is basically to point out an inconsistency he's telling them why are you bothering to practice this baptism on behalf of the Dead when you don't even believe in the future Resurrection how does that baptism at all help these people if they're not resurrected it's inconsistent he's just showing how their works are not aligning with their theology so what does the rest of the bible teach perhaps the most critical issue with LDS baptism for the dead is that it absolutely contradicts what the rest of the Bible teaches about death salvation baptism and proxy works it's important to recognize that baptism is not an essential prerequisite for eternal life while it is is an important and commanded ordinance it is possible for an unbaptized believer to enter into God's Eternal kingdom do you remember the repentant Thief who died on the cross next to Jesus's Jesus assured him truly I say to you today you will be with me in Paradise he received no Christian baptism and yet he was accepted into Paradise With Jesus the Bible actually tells us exactly what one must do in order to have eternal life at one point the Jews asked Jesus what must we do to be doing the works of God and in that context specifically they meant the works that lead to eternal life Jesus answered them this is the work of God that you believe in him whom he has sent in fact the entire book of Galatians is written to say that if a person adds even a commanded ordinance to their faith as a necessary prerequisite for eternal life they are believing in a different gospel our works and ordinances even ordinances commanded by God are not what grant us eternal life it's the one who believes in Jesus who will have eternal life even if that person never has the opportunity to be baptized whoever believes in him shall not perish but shall have eternal life in addition to all of this there is no chance for salvation after death Hebrews 9 tells us exactly what will happen after we die it is appointed for man to die once and after that comes judgment death then judgment when a person dies he does not go to a holding Place Spirit prison to wait for some other person to perform ordinances so that he can get out this idea is entirely invented by men and it is not found in the Bible on one occasion Jesus told a parable about a wicked rich man and a righteous man named Lazarus who both died they both went to their respective places and in the parable Jesus Jesus records what Abraham father Abraham the patriarch Abraham what he says to this wicked rich man who was suffering in agony in this hellish place he said between us and you a great Chasm has been fixed in order that those who had pass from here to you may not be able and none may cross from there to us the rich man understood that the time to make a decision for the Lord is during one's Lifetime and not after that's why in the parable he requests to go back and warn his brothers about the agony of this place before they died according to Jesus's Parable it was impossible for this rich man to get out of that place he was there to stay even though he wished that he could leave if we reject the gospel in this life we will not Escape future judgment there are no Second Chances The Book of Mormon actually ironically teaches this exact same principle it says for behold this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God yay behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors another issue here the category of proxy work cheapens the work of Jesus the LDS doctrine of baptism for the dead inadvertently teaches that the atonement of Jesus was insufficient and that the missing component can be supplied by any random Latter-Day Saint who goes into a temple to perform ordinances on behalf of someone else according to Mormonism there are billions of people who never had the opportunity to receive baptism by someone with proper priesthood Authority this means that for those billions of people the proxy work of a living Latter-Day Saint is equally necessary for a deceased person's eternal life as is the crucifixion of Jesus if some other person does not do these ordinances on their behalf then the atonement of Jesus cannot help them receive the fullness of eternal life each person is responsible to place his own faith in Jesus for salvation one person's beliefs or Works does not have saving power over another his work and his atonements are sufficient no help needed while Paul's reference to baptism on behalf of the Dead in 1 Corinthians 15 is a bit peculiar there are a few things of which we can be quite certain first Paul does not command us to practice this second the faithful Christians of Paul's day were not practicing it third baptism is not a pre requisite for eternal life fourth there are no Second Chances after death and fifth no person can fulfill the requirement for eternal life on behalf of another rather than affirming it the Bible patently rejects baptism for the dead the gospel is quite simple if you repent of your sins turn away from them and believe in the work that Jesus did then you will have eternal life
